A practical deep dive into what medico-legal experts need—and don’t need—in your instructions.

Presented by: Wes Lerch & Tegan Bryant
Guest Specialist: Dr Simon Perkins, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, BSc MBBS FRACS

Join our upcoming medico-legal seminar and earn 1 CPD points while enhancing your professional knowledge and skills!

Overview:

Following Seminar 1: Choosing the Right Expert and Seminar 2: Beyond the Template, this session brings the series full circle by shifting perspective to the experts themselves. After learning how to identify the right specialist and draft a comprehensive letter of instruction (LOI), Seminar 3 explores how your instructions are received—and how they can be improved—directly from the expert’s point of view.

Featuring a guest medico-legal specialist, this interactive session offers real-world feedback on what works, what doesn’t, and how to write LOIs that elicit clearer, more useful reports.

Building on our ongoing hypothetical case study, participants will critically assess and refine a draft letter of instruction using expert feedback, applying key principles to improve clarity, structure, and relevance.

Seminar Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Gain insight from a guest medico-legal expert on improving the clarity and utility of your instructions.
  • Identify and correct common pitfalls that result in poor-quality reports.
  • Learn how to frame targeted, relevant, and admissible questions.
  • Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of medical experts in report writing.
  • Strengthen collaboration between legal professionals and experts for better medicolegal outcomes.

Session Length:

90 minutes.

Note: Attendance at Seminar 1 & 2 is not required for Seminar 3, which is designed to stand alone and is open to all professionals.
